Monday

Whole Group

The students will identify various types of words in the texts being read. The teacher will ask the students to think of a synonym and antonym for each word in the passage. The students will use thesauruses to work in groups to determine a synonym and antonym for each word.

Small Group

Modeling: The teacher will model the use of roots and affixes to pronounce unfamiliar words during reading. The teacher will demonstrate for students how he/she as a reader peels off the prefix and suffix, locates the root, and thinks about the meaning of the words.

Guided Practice: The teacher will guide the student to help them infer the meaning of additional multi-meaning words.

 

Tuesday

Whole Group

The teacher will give students cards with words and their definitions prior to reading a text. The students will match the words to the definitions. Students will then read the text. The students will use the appropriate reference materials for this activity.

Small Group

Group Practice: The students will create a bubble map with a word in the center. The students will write synonyms and antonyms for the word in the outside circle. The teacher should model using this activity before assigning to students. The students should use one circle map for synonyms and another circle map for antonyms.

Independent Practice: The students will complete the synonyms and antonyms activity.

 

Wednesday

Whole Group

Anticipatory Set: The teacher will place a transparency of a txt feature chart or graph on the overhead and ask students to analyze information about the chart or graph.

Modeling: The teacher will discuss various text features from the chart or graph and tips used for reading charts and graphs. The teacher will also use hands on materials to demonstrate to students how each text feature is used.

Guided Practice: The teacher and the student will use handout materials to guide their understanding of genres, text structures, and text features, help with charts, graphs and other illustrations from a textbook.

 

Thursday

Whole Group

The teacher and students will review text features from handouts. Students must ask questions about text features and how they are used to make understanding of illustrations clearer.

Independent Practice: Students will complete genres, text structure, and text feature activities using various reading materials and diagrams along with questions.

Closure: The teacher will review text features and the tips that aid students learning of text features.

 

Friday

ASSESSMENT

 

The students will use prior knowledge to answer test items.

The students will be assessed informally through observation and interview and formally by assessment.

 

The students who score 70 and below will be given reteach activities and those who score 71 and higher will be given enrichment activities.

Reteach: The students will focus on single meaning words first.

Technology: The students will use the overhead projector to analyze texts.

Monday

Whole Group

Anticipatory Set: The teacher will write several types of root words and affixes examples on the board. The teacher and the students will break the word into parts and think of helpful clues as to the meanings of the words. The teacher will inform the students that affixes are used to help the reader distinguish multiple meanings of words. The teacher and the students will discuss each word and their meanings.

Small Group

Modeling: The teacher will ask the students to analyze each prefix and suffix examples given in the anticipatory set and demonstrate how each word can be used to change the meaning of sentences.

Guided Practice: The teacher and students will complete a scavenger hunt for words with affixes throughout the newspaper.

 

Tuesday

Whole Group

Review roots and affixes meanings using flash cards. Note: Teacher will orally check students understanding of suffix and prefix meaning.

Independent Practice: The students will complete the roots and affixes activity from study island and create up to ten sentences using root words and affixes.

 

Wednesday

Anticipatory Set: The teacher will create a list of comparing and contrasting signal word to be posted in the classroom. The teacher will read a passage and the students will pick out comparing and contrasting signal words from the passage.

Modeling/Guided Practice: The teacher and the students will discuss and complete a handout. The handout is used to guide the students understanding of how to distinguish from comparing and contrasting two or more things.

 

Thursday

Whole Group

Review comparing and contrasting signal word chart with the class. Note: The students must know how that to compare means to explain how two or more things are alike and contrast means to explain how two or more things are different.

Independent Practice: The students will read and organize text completing a Venn Diagram of the text using signal words.

Closure: The teacher will provide students with immediate feedback from the independent practice on comparing and contrasting.

Enrichment: The students will be allowed to write a passage using vocabulary and affixes.

INTASC: 1-9

Technology: The students will be allowed to listen to pre-recorded passages and pick out the affixes.

 

Spring 2008
