Monday

Whole Group

Anticipatory Set

The teacher will read an excerpt and ask students questions that foster drawing conclusions. The teacher must challenge students thinking using question answer relationships. Students must be able to analyze questions based on facts and details from the story.

Small Group

Modeling: The teacher will write on the board the following details: The smell of peanuts and cotton candy filled the air. I heard a loud clapping. I even heard loud bellows that sounded like elephants. The teacher will ask the students to infer and draw conclusions as to where these things could possibly take place. The teacher will discuss how you combine what you already know using the given details to infer and draw the conclusion that the circus is the place where all these things take place.

Guided Practice: The teacher and the students will discuss and complete the drawing conclusion activity. The students and the teacher will discuss and answer related questions to the passage.

 

Tuesday

Whole Group

Review drawing conclusions and making inferences details. The teacher will read a passage and make a guess along with support a guess about the characters in the story. The teacher and the students will discuss their findings.

Small Group

Group Practice: The teacher will group students together to work cooperatively on inferences, whereas the students will read short passages to draw conclusions and infer meanings from the passages.

Independent Practice: Students will read short passages and complete inferences comprehension practice questions.

 

Wednesday

Anticipatory Set

The teacher will place a transparency of a text feature chart or graph on the overhead and ask students to analyze the information about the chart or graph.

Modeling: The teacher will discuss various text features from the chart or graph and tips used for reading charts and graphs. The teacher will also use hands on materials to demonstrate to students how each text feature is used.

Guided Practice: The teacher and the student will use handout materials to guide their understanding of how to each text feature helps with charts, graphs, and other illustrations from a regular textbook.

 

Thursday

Whole Group

The teacher and students will review text features from handouts found in the reading folders. Students may ask any questions about text features and how they are used to make understanding of illustrations clearer.

Independent Practice: Students will complete text feature activities using various reading materials and diagrams along with questions.

Closure: The teacher will review text features and the tips that aid students learning of text features.

 

Friday

Assessment

The students will use prior knowledge to answer test items.

The student will be assessed informally through observations and formally through assessments.

 

 

 Reteach: The students that score below 70, will be allowed to use the tips and aids to complete the text feature activities.

Enrichment: The students that score above 71, will continue by making their own text feature chart or graph.

Technology: The students will use the overhead projectors to view transparencies.

The teacher will give the students a list of words and have them identify the prefixes and suffixes. The students will tell the meaning of the word based on information stated in the text and confirm or revise the prediction based upon subsequent text.

 

Tuesday

The students will use a Bridge Map to show the relationship between antonyms, synonyms, or homonyms. The teacher will guide the students to find syllabication types in a song or poem underlining them in the text.

 

Wednesday

The teacher will select homophones that may prove confusing to the students. The students will write a book report following the outline to summarize book.

 

Thursday

The students will compose visual images based upon text. The teacher will use a double bubble map to compare and contrast the settings of the stories. The teacher will ask the students to close his or her eyes and visualize the story. The students will draw pictures of the scenes and characters that he or she visualizes.

 

Friday

Assessment

The students will use prior knowledge and the skills learned to answer test items.

The students will be assessed informally and formally through observations as well as assessments.

Reteach: The students that struggle with the skills will be given affix packets to take home and work on with their parents.

Enrichment: The students that complete the visualization activity will be allowed to share their pictures with the class.

Technology: The students that are not able to read the passages alone will be allowed to listen at the listening center.
