Ability vs Achievement

An effective teacher is one that actually teaches her students. I think that I must define effective before we can actually begin to define what an effective teacher is. Teachers at Tougaloo College defined the effective teacher as the R.E.A.D. teacher. READ teachers are reflective, effective, active, and decisive in their teaching skills to students. Students benefit better from a READ teacher than any other kind of teacher. These teachers have more to offer their students and are also more open to the suggestions and ideas of students and parents.

As defined by the American Heritage Dictionary reflective is defined as being able to manifest strategies from other teachers. Reflective teachers are teachers who use their past experiences as classroom techniques. These experiences are techniques or characteristics that he or she has found to be most effective for the students in the learning environment. They may also ask other teachers of their experiences or what practices they have found that worked best in their classroom. Reflective teachers are also hard to find because most teachers use.

The American Heritage Dictionary classifies effective as having a strong impression or response on a particular person or thing. An effective teacher is one that establishes a connection with the student to understand what the student is having trouble with. Effective teachers are most impressionable on students. They listen and think effectively to the needs of the students. Teachers come to work with their hearts and minds open, receiving not only any problems educationally but all others that may hinder the student from continuing to receive the appropriate education.

Active is described as being energetic, lively or being in action. Active teachers are hard to these days. An active teacher is one that involves herself in the activities of the students to keep them motivated and willing to learn. Active teachers influence their students so that they will better comprehend to context of the material. Active teachers are hard to come by. Once a parent comes across an active teacher he should hold on and make sure that his child takes advantage of the opportunity.

Decisive teachers are determined. Decisive teachers are also able to make sound decisions for and about their students. A parent can rest assure that if their child has a decisive teacher that he or she will look out for the best interest of the child. The experiences that this teacher makes are based on her experiences as both a student and her past experiences with teachers. Sometimes this one key aspect can be the difference between a proficient or incompetent child.

READ teachers are the most effective teachers in the field today. They encompass all characteristics that have been defined above as well as other influential traits that they may have gathered along their way. All of these attributes are needed in order to ensure the success of the students in the learning environment.

Effective teachers are essential to a balanced class environment. They ensure a quality education by continuing to provide best practices based on research. Effective teachers plan their lessons effectively and around the needs of the students. They will also reward students for going beyond what is expected of them in class. Hopefully, I can be an effective teacher and touch lives of individuals as I was touched by a teacher that I once had.
